So, wir haben jetzt den 15. September. In knapp vier Wochen geht
unsere große Reise auch schon los.
Es gibt noch soviel zu planen, organisieren und arrangieren, aber es ist
unglaublich aufregend und spannend, und wir freuen uns riesig auf diese große Auszeit.

Today I booked all 4 flights, tomorrow I will need to lash out a bit (I wish!) more on deposits and send money half way around the world - but then it is all fixed, the point of no return! one more month...and time will just fly, I guess! Still a lot to do, things to arrange, doctor's permits to get, courses to prepare, beach wear to be bought...but all so exciting and adventurous - who would have guessed that I'd ever get Silvia to do something crazy like this?

Wer es noch nicht weiss: Wir hauen einfach mal für 3 Monate ab und entkommen so dem unangenehm englischen Winter.
Nick wird in Mauritius seinen Dive Instructor machen und auch ich habe vor, einige Tauchqualifikationen zu absolvieren. Zusätzlich wollen wir vielleicht eine Sprachschule besuchen
und je nach Angebot Kochkurse, Wanderungen, Winetasting, Kitesurfen und was sich sonst noch so ergibt, angreifen.

Nach zwei anstrengenden Monaten Mauritius geht es dann noch für vier Wochen nach Südafrika, wo neben Safaris, Freunde besuchen, Tauchen noch viele Dinge in Planung sind. Zudem wollen wir mit dem Auto von Durban nach Kapstadt die Garden Route entlang fahren. Ein langer Traum von uns. Wir sind gerade dabei, die ganzen Eckdaten und Routen festzulegen. Halte euch mit Hilfe dieses Blogs diesbezüglich auf dem Laufenden.

For those who do not know yet...we have decided to obey that last bit of youths in us and do something pretty crazy (for someone boring and dull like me) that has been on my mind for ages...we are going to Africa...for 3 months! The thought of spending another winter in cold, wet and miserable England (no offense!) just seemed to be too much to bear - and the prospects of fulfilling a dream before life gets even more serious was just too tempting. And when lastly (and most importantly) HUF HAUS agreed to give permission, under the promise not to miss me too much in that time, there was no more holding back!

The plan looks like this: Silvia and I will spend 8 weeks in / on Mauritius, a beautiful island in the Indian Ocean, East of Madagascar - and another 4 weeks in my favourite country of all - in South Africa. My personal goal is to advance my diving qualification up to instructor level, for which I have been already preparing here in the UK by becoming a PADI Rescue Diver. Silvia will hopefully take to diving as well and then we will be able to share many unforgettable memories together, under water and on dry land. Further there are many other things to do in Mauritius and SA, such as kite surfing, to learn another language (French), more diving, martial art course, sommelier course, cooking courses, more diving, plenty of sport, safari - and of course meeting our dear friends in SA again! So - plenty of plans, and hopefully enough time to do it all.

This blog shall inform you about our plans, our routes, our experiences, our impressions on this trip, shall reassure those who worry about our well-being, and we shall try to keep this informative and entertaining, hopefully without bragging (tell me to shut up if I do!) and being too boring!

Am 17. Oktober geht es also gen Mauritius.
Wir fliegen von London direkt nach Mauritius. 11,5 Stunden wird das dauern.
Der internationale Flughafen von Mauritius wird umgangssprachlich auch Plaisance genannt. Seine offizielle Bezeichnung ist aber: Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport of Mauritius. Der Flughafen liegt 5 km südwestlich des Ortes Mahébourg und ca. 40 km von Port Louis, der Hauptstadt von Mauritius, entfernt.

Klima&Wetter:

Generell ist das Klima auf Mauritius tropisch bis subtropisch. In der Hauptsaison zwischen Ende Oktober und April liegen die Tagestemperaturen im Durchschnitt um 30 Grad, nachts ist es etwa zehn Grad kühler. Die Hauptsaison ist gleichzeitig auch Regenzeit, jedoch halten die Niederschläge meist nicht lange an. Im Hochland sind die Temperaturen stets ca. fünf Grad niedriger als an den Küsten. Die Luftfeuchtigkeit liegt im Jahresdurchschnitt bei 80-90 %, das Wasser erreicht in der Hauptsaison einen Wert von ca. 25 Grad.

Sprache

Amts- und Unterrichtssprache ist Englisch, während das Französische das öffentliche Leben beherrscht. Die Umgangssprache, die von allen gesprochen wird, ist Kreolisch. Dazu werden in vielen Familien zusätzlich indische Sprachen, das chinesische Kantonesisch und arabische Dialekte gesprochen.

Die Währung auf Mauritus heißt Rupie (Rs). 1 Rupie entspricht etwa 4 Eurocent; 1 Euro entspricht demnach ca. 26 Rs.
